INTERNAL EXAMINATIONS

HOW WILL I BE ASSIGNED TO THE CORRECT LEVEL AT THE BEGINNING OF THE COURSE?

The week before the course begins, there are placement tests. You will find out the exact date when you apply for the course.
Assignment to a class without a placement test is only temporary. Based on achievement in the first two weeks of courses, it may be necessary for you to change to another course level. In any case, placement is made according to your skills and achievement; you cannot choose your level at will.

INTERNAL EXAMINATIONS

Three internal examinations are offered, namely:

These exams will be held at the end of each course level. The exams, the "Abschlussprüfung der Aufbaustufe" and the "Abschlussprüfung der Basisstufe", are at the same time the placement tests for new course participants.

ABSCHLUSSPRÜFUNG DER BASISSTUFE /AUFNAHMETEST AUFBAUSTUFE
(Final exam of Basic Level / Admittance test for Intermediate Level )

After attending Basisstufe I (level 1), you can advance to Basisstufe II (level 2), if your achievement in the course is sufficient. A final exam is not given at the end of Basisstufe I.

After Basisstufe II should you want to advance to Aufbaustufe I (level 3), you must pass the Abschlussprüfung der Basisstufe (Final exam of Basic Level) successfully. This test simultaneously serves as the "Aufnahmetest für die Aufbaustufe" (Admittance test for Intermediate Level). For acceptance to Aufbaustufe I  you generally need at least 300 hours German-language instruction.

This test consists of four parts and takes about three hours: (test example)

  • Dictation of approximately 130 words
  • Reading Comprehension (around 10 questions concerning a text of roughly 30 lines)
  • Text Production (from keywords it is necessary to formulate a connected text of approximately 8 to 10 sentences)
  • Grammar Exercises

If you receive at least 2/3 of the total possible points in this test, you have passed the examination and may receive a certificate to that effect, should you so desire. If you receive between 60% and 66% of the possible points, you may also attend Aufbaustufe I, but at the end of Aufbaustufe I, you must repeat the examination once again.

Fees: The examination is free of charge. For a fee of € 10,-, you will be given a certificate.

Abschlussprüfung der Aufbaustufe / Aufnahmetest für die Qualifizierungsstufe
(Final Exam of Intermediate Level / Admittance Exam for Qualification Level)

After attending Aufbaustufe I, you can attend Aufbaustufe II (level 4).

Before admittance to Qualifizierungsstufe I (level 5) you must pass the Abschlussprüfung der Aufbaustufe (Final exam of Intermediate Level). This test serves simultaneously as "Aufnahmeprüfung für die Qualifizierungsstufe" (Admittance test for Qualification Level). For acceptance in Qualifizierungsstufe I, you generally need at least 600 hours German-language instruction.

The examination consists of four parts and takes approximately two and one-half hours: (test example)

  • Listening Comprehension
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Text Production
  • Grammatical Completion and Remodeling Exercises

Fees: The examination is free of charge. For a fee of € 20,-, you will be given a certificate.

Abschlussprüfung der Qualifizierungsstufe:
Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH)
(FINAL EXAM OF QUALIFICATION LEVEL: TEST OF GERMAN-LANGUAGE ABILITY FOR UNIVERSITY ADMISSION (DSH))

The courses, Qualifizierungsstufe I and II  (Levels 5 and 6), prepare students for the Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH), which is offered at the end of each Qualifizierungsstufe course. The certificate of successful completion of the examination is recognized by German universities as evidence of sufficient German-language skills.

The examination consists of a written and oral part. (test example)
The written part contains exercises in:

  • Comprehension and processing of a spoken text
  • Comprehension and working on a written text including academic language structures
  • Production on the basis of a given text

Once the written examination has been passed, the oral exam will follow. It is obligatory for the DSH.

Participation Requirements: In order to take part in the exam, you must attend our Qualifizierungsstufe course.
