What do I need for registration?
siehe What do we need when you register?

When can I register?
For course dates where places are still available, you can register throughout the year. There is no deadline. Courses are usually fully booked 2 weeks before starting. Early registration is therefore recommended.

I am registered for a course and have paid, but cannot be in Munich in time for the start of the course. What should I do?

If it is only a matter of a few days:
Please inform us in good time, and we will reserve the place for you. A reduction of the course fees for delayed start is not possible.
If there is a longer delay:
In justified cases (for example, in case of delays in the granting of visas), we can reregister you for a later course date. The course fee can then be applied to the later date. However, will will do this only if you have given notice in writing and in good time.

Can I sign up for a course at a certain time of day?
We offer the same course program in the mornings (Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 12:30) and afternoons (Monday to Friday, 14:00 to 17:30). We will do our best to accommodate your request for a particular time of day. However, since the number of places is limited, we cannot guarantee a place at a particular time of day. (Priority is given to the participants who were already enrolled on a previous course with us.)

When should I pay the course fee?
For intensive courses, the following applies: 60 EUR is payable on registration; the balance is payable 14 days before the course starts (the exact date can be found on your confirmation). If you register for a special course, we request you pay the entire course fee at once. (For detailed information, see: What do we need when you register?)
Please note: The number of participants is limited. It may be that there are no more places available before the end of the payment period. We therefore recommend early payment of course fees.

What do I do if I register at short notice and I do not have enough time to make a bank transfer?
The last free places on courses will be allocated on receipt of the full course fee. You are welcome to come to our office and pay the course fee with cash or card (EC / VISA / Mastercard). If you are unable to come to our office, you can make a bank transfer and send us the proof of payment by email (to info@dkfa.de).

What should I do if my company or a sholarship provider wishes to cover the costs?
Please ask your company or sponsor to fill in the declaration of assumption of costs form and return it by post, e-mail or fax.
Please note: Declarations of assumption costs can only be processed if a corresponding registration has been completed.

What course level will I be placed in?
When registering you will be asked about your previous knowledge of German. Please answer this question as precisely as possible, so that we can make an initial assessment of your level.
For intensive courses, the following applies: From Level 2 upwards, you will normally be required to complete an online placement test. Please see the information on the page: How are you placed in a course? The result of the placement test is binding.

Where do courses take place?
Our courses are held at the following locations: Agnesstraße 27, Karl-Theodor-Straße 69 and in rooms at the LMU.

EXAMINATIONS

Who can take the DSH?
Please see: External and internal DSH
Your registration is only valid once the completed registration form and the examination fee has been received by Deutschkurse bei der Universität München e.V.

When does the DSH take place?
External DSH: For academic subjects without admission s restrictions ("freie Fächer" - "free electives"): beginning/middle of March for the summer semester, the beginning/middle of September for the winter semester.
For restricted admission subjects ("NC-Fächer" - "restrictive electives"): in mid-July. The exact date of your DSH exam will be provided by the University.
Internal DSH: If you attend one of our Level 6 courses, you can also take the DSH at the end of the course. This is possible six times a year.

Where can I find out about the DSH?
In the Deutschkurse bei der Universität München office you can buy a booklet with five sample examinations (tasks + solutions). On the page What is in the DSH exam? you will also find a sample exam for download.

What happens if I fail?
You can retake the test at any time.

I already have a language certificate - is it recognized at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München?
You will find all the relevant information on the LMU website: Nachweise der Deutschkenntnisse (proof of competence in German)

I want to study at the Technical Ubiversity of Munich - which language certificates are recognized there?
As the conditions at the Technical University vary by department, please inform yourself directly on the TU München website.

Can I study at other universities in Germany if I have taken my DSH in Munich?
Usually yes; but inform yourself in any case in time for the enrollment appointment at the university where you want to study.

What is the difference between DSH and TestDaF?
A comparison of the two tests (subject to update)

How can I improve my listening skills?
On our website, there are free exercises to help you improve your listening comprehension.

I have a disability. Can I take an exam?
Yes, but so that we can organise everything, your documents must be submitted to us in good time: Three weeks before the examination, we need a recent medical certificate from a doctor in Germany as well as an official form completed by the doctor, which you can obtain from us in the office. If you have any question on this subject, please contact our office as soon as possible. If the documents are submitted too late, they can no longer be considered. The reduced task volume will be noted in the certificate, to which the official form will be appended.

HEALTH INSURANCE

Do I need health insurance?
Yes because without health insurance you cannot obtain a residence permit.

How and where can I insure myself?
Students from EU countries can often carry over their insurance from their home country. Inform yourself at the Ausländerbehörde (Immigration Office) / Kreisverwaltungsreferat (Regional Administration Office), as to whether health insurance from your home country is recognized here as sufficient. You will only qualify for statutory student health insurance in Germany if you are enrolled in Higher Education Courses.
During the period attending a language course prior to your university studies, you can be insured with private insurers, such as the following:
Care Concept
Online-Anmeldung zur Krankenversicherung
Email: info@care-concept.de

WORK PERMIT

Can I earn money while attending German courses?
If your resident permit states "only to attend German classes" or "only for study purposes", you may not work while attending German courses.

VISA

Do I need a visa?
It depends on the country of origin and the duration of stay. Please inform yourself at the German embassy or consulate in your home country.
Our recommendation: If you want to come (over tree months) to Germany for an extended period of study, do not travel on a tourist visa. It may be that you cannot extend this type of visa.

What do I need for the visa?
Please inquire at the German enbassy or consulate in your home country and/or the KVR München (Kreisverwaltungsreferat - Regional Administration Office).

How long does it take to obtain a visa?
Depending on the country of origin, usually 6 to 8 weeks.

What should I do if my visa application is rejected?
The German authorities are not obliged to specify reasons for rejecting a visa application. An appeal against the rejection is usually pointless; the best policy is to try again after a certain period of time.
If you have paid a registration fee for the course and the German authorities confirm in writing that your visa application has been rejected, you can reclaim the registration fee.
However, this only applies
- if you inform us of your withdrawal punctually
- submit written proof of the rejection
